Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
She was an Englishwoman known as the founder of modern Nursing. She served as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War. She managed to lower death rates by improving hygiene and living standards. She is a famous icon of the Victorian era, AKA "The Lady with the Lamp", who made rounds of wounded soldiers at night.
She is responsible for the foundation of the first nursing school in 1860. In her honor, the newly trained nurses should first take the Nightingale Pledge, and the International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th, i.e. her birthday.
She spent her life helping the society, the poor, the sick, and the forgotten.
Surprisingly, she innovated what’s known as a pie chart, and is a pioneer in the use of infographics, as she tried to represent statistical data.
She once recorded her voice on a vax cylinder in 1890:
“When I am no longer even a memory, just a name, I hope my voice may perpetuate the great work of my life. God bless my dear old comrades of Balaclava and bring them safe to shore. Florence Nightingale.”
